World Resources Institute (WRI)


Headquartered in New York City, Bristol-Myers Squibb is a global pharmaceuticals and health care company. The company tracks a variety of "key sustainability indicators," including energy consumption and GHG emissions, and has a program goal to reduce its GHG emissions per dollar of sales by 10% below 2001 levels by 2010.


Headquartered in New York City, Citigroup is a global financial services company offering banking, insurance, and investments. The company has developed a system to track its energy consumption and related GHG emissions worldwide and has purchased renewable energy to power a portion of some facility loads. In January 2004, Citigroup issued a comprehensive environmental policy and reports annually on its environmental performance.


Headquartered in New York City, Con Edison is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc., one of the nation's largest investor-owned energy companies. The utility provides electric, gas and steam service to more than 3 million customers in New York City and Westchester County, New York. The company provides public information on energy and environmental issues.


Headquartered in Stamford, CT, General Electric is a diversified company that provides products and services ranging from jet engines to power generation, financial services to plastics, and medical imaging to news and information. In 2005, GE launched its Ecomagination initiative and aims to increase research and development in climate friendly technologies to $1.5 billion by 2010 and double revenues from the sales of such products in the same timeframe. GE also has committed to reduce total GHG emissions by 1% by 2012.


Johnson & Johnson is a global manufacturer of health care products for the consumer, pharmaceutical and medical devices and diagnostics markets. The company has a set of environmental policies, including its "Climate Friendly Energy Policy." Johnson & Johnson has a goal to reduce GHG emissions in absolute terms by 7% by 2010, with 1990 as a base year. Emissions performance is tracked on their web site and in their annual sustainability report. The company is headquartered in New Brunswick, NJ.


JPMorgan Chase & Co. is a leading global financial services firm with operations in more than 50 countries. In April 2005, the company adopted a comprehensive environmental policy (see policy) and also set a goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 5-7% by 2012 using 2005 as its baseline. The firm is currently working to develop strategies to better manage its energy consumption by cutting waste, increasing efficiency, in addition to adopting other measures.


Headquartered in Rochester, NY, Kodak manufactures products for photography and imaging. They also generate much of their own energy. The company tracks its GHG emissions and established a goal to reduce worldwide production of GHGs by 10 percent by 2008, with 2002 as a benchmark year.  The company voluntarily reports its GHG emissions in the California Climate Action Registry.


Headquartered in Berlin, CT, Northeast Utilities Systems provides electricity, gas, and energy services in the northeastern U.S. The company is in the process of assessing its GHG emissions, and provides public data and information on its environmental performance.


Headquartered in New York City, Pfizer is a global provider of prescription medicines and health care products. The company was a charter member of the U.S. EPA's Climate Leaders Program and has a goal to reduce its GHG emissions by 35% per dollar of revenue from 2000 to 2007. Pfizer provides public information on its energy use and carbon dioxide emissions.


Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa., PPG Industries is a diversified manufacturer that supplies products and services around the world. The company is a global supplier of coatings, glass, fiber glass and chemicals. PPG's commitment to environmental responsibility is long-standing. For decades PPG has been committed to making products and pursuing business practices that help sustain a healthy global environment. This commitment is articulated through PPG's Environmental, Health and Safety policy (see policy) which emphasizes continuous improvement and sustainability.

Related is one of the largest privately-owned real estate development firms in the United States. Headquartered in New York City, Related also has offices and major developments in Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Pheonix, Chicago, Aspen/Snowmass and Boston. Related is staunchly committed to sustainable design with over $6 billion in green development underway or completed. The firm developed one of the first green residential buildings in the nation, Tribeca Green in Battery Park City, New York and Chicago's first green residential building, 340 on the Park. In Aspen/Snowmass, Related WestPac is creating one of the first LEED-certified neighborhoods with the $2 billion, 80-acre mixed-use redevelopment of Snowmass Village.


Headquartered in Framingham, MA, Staples sells office products, including supplies, technology, furniture, and business services. The company tracks its GHG emissions and is looking beyond its own operations at the environmental footprint of products. Staples is also an industry leader in green power purchasing.


Time Inc., a subsidiary of Time Warner, is the largest magazine publisher in the world with over 120 titles including People, Time, Fortune and Sports Illustrated. The company tracks and works to reduce the climate impact of its activities throughout the supply chain and publicly reports its progress in its sustainability report (see report). Time Inc. was a founding member of the Paper Working Group which works to encourage the increased availability and procurement of sustainably produced paper. The company is headquartered in New York City.


United Technologies Corporation (UTC) is a diversified manufacturer of engines, fuel cells, aerospace systems, and systems for heating and cooling, among other industrial products. The company set performance goals to reduce its energy consumption and GHG emissions by 40% compared to 1997 levels (normalized for revenue). Information about its performance is reported on their web site. UTC met its energy and GHG emissions goals in 2004 and was the recipient of the U.S. EPA Climate Protection Award in 2005.  UTC is now in the process of setting new GHG reduction goals.  The company is headquartered in Hartford, CT.


World Resources Institute (WRI) is an environmental research and policy organization that creates solutions to protect the planet and improve people's lives. The Institute participates in the Climate Northeast project through its Climate and Energy Program (CEP). CEP works to fulfill WRI's goal of protecting the global climate system from further harm due to emissions of greenhouse gases and to help humanity and the natural world adapt to unavoidable climate change. CEP includes the Green Power Market Development Group, the Climate Midwest project and the GHG Protocol Initiative.

WRI's role in the Climate Northeast project is:

  • Provide guidance on how to develop a GHG emissions inventory that can be used as a tool to measure, manage and reduce GHG emissions
  • Help to find opportunities for cost-effective clean energy projects
  • Facilitate discussions on emerging climate change policies and their implications for business, as well the potential for emissions trading markets
  • Work with the group to understand and articulate the business case for corporate GHG programs
  • General stewardship and administration of the project

WRI has independent funding for its work. The Institute accepts small donations from corporate partners which are used for earmarked expenses under the project. Companies may be Corporate Sponsors to the Institute, providing general contributions.
